Some of Ohio’s musical artists
Ohio has spawned musical wonders in a variety of genres. You might not see any of these performers on your local stage anytime soon, but OhioLyric.com would like to take this time to remember some musicians that have since moved away.Steve Arrington started as a member of the Toledo, Ohio lounge band The Murphy’s. He later became a key member (drumming and vocals) for the popular Ohio funk band Slave, which had several hits including “Just a Touch of Love” and “Watching You.” He later went on to a solo career.Dan Auerbach is a member of the Ohio blues-rock group The Black Keys (based in Akron). In 2009, he released his first solo album, Keep It Hid, on which he delved into gospel sounds along with his customary rock bent.Bobby Bare is a country musician from Ironton with a long career, releasing his debut “Detroit City” And Other Hits in 1963 and his latest album, The Moon Was Blue, in 2005. In between, he also fathered alternative country musician Bobby Bare Jr., with whom he recorded the Grammy-nominated 1974 song “Daddy What If.”James Emery is a jazz guitarist who grew up in Shaker Heights. He released albums on numerous avant-garde and indie-labels, including Knitting Factory and the German Enja Records. His latest album, 2003′s Transformations, was released in 2003. What’s he been doing since then? We’re not quite sure.Of course, we can’t go without mentioning Jalacy Hawkins, better known as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. His raw style of rock and roll, exemplified on tracks like “I Put a Spell on You” and “Orange Colored Sky,” has captured numerous fans through the years. Fun fact: at the time of his death in 2000, it was estimated that Hawkins had somewhere around 75 children.
