The Springfield
Children’s Chorus made its
debut performance at the 1990 Ohio Lyric Theatre
Christmas Pageant, and became a full-season chorus in 1991.
The Chorus
appears in the OLT Christmas Pageant and Spring Concert, and performs at
various community functions throughout their nine-month season. They have
performed at the Gala Opening of the Clark State Performing Arts Center,
with the Dayton Bach Society, at Wittenberg’s Epiphany Service, and with
the Springfield Symphony Orchestra at their Christmas Gala. They have
traveled to Indiana to sing with the Fort Wayne Children’s Chorus and the
Logansport Children’s Choir, and to Cleveland to sing with the Riverside
Children’s Chorus. For OLT’s 35th Anniversary, they presented Benjamin
Britten’s Ceremony of Carols at Wittenberg’s Weaver Chapel. Several
members of the Chorus have been selected to participate in honors choirs
in Cincinnati, Baltimore, San Diego and Williamsburg. In February 1998,
they presented Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore as part of Clark
State Performing Arts Center’s family series. In May of 2004, the
Children’s Chorus sang at the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s 60th
Anniversary concert in the performance of Carmina Burana. Last April, the
chorus traveled to Washington, DC and performed in a number of the
national locations there.
The Chorus has participated in
several Children’s Chorus Festivals, hosting a Festival at Clark State
Performing Arts Center in 1996 and also in March 1999. In April of 2000,
the Chorus traveled to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to participate in an
International Children’s Choral Festival and they participated in a
Children’s Chorus Festival in Chicago in 2001. In April of 2004, the
Concert Chorus traveled to San Diego to participate in the San Diego
Children’s Chorus Festival.
The Springfield Children’s
Chorus is divided into two instructional units. The Concert Chorus consists of children from 6th through 8th grades (9th grade
members are invited to return for one year), and the Cadet Chorus consists of 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Many area schools are
represented.
Both choruses rehearse on
Tuesday evenings at Southgate Baptist Church, 2111 S. Center Blvd. in
Springfield. The purpose of these select choruses is to provide talented area
youth with a rich and rewarding experience that educates young singers in
correct vocal technique and excellence.
Membership in The Springfield
Children’s Chorus is by audition.
