Of all the arts and cultural events in Ohio, theater is perhaps the most renowned. Here are a few of our favorite Ohio theaters to take in a show or check out a concert:
Akron Civic Theater: Located in historic downtown Akron, the Civic Theater hosts plays, performances and even live concerts. Flanked by restaurants and bars, all theater-goers need here for a night out is to set their adt columbus ohio alarms, make the short drive then hand over their tickets!
Huron Playhouse: Ohio’s oldest continuing summer theater puts on 5 full time shows in the summer months. Tickets are inexpensive and shows are varied, so get in line for the season’s best shows.
Stuart’s Opera House: Located in Nelsonville, Stuart’s Opera House anchors the downtown area and performs weekly throughout the year. With world-class opera just outside of Columbus, residents in Nelsonville get a bit of culture for an inexpensive price.
Theater is one of Ohio’s biggest industries and with so many great spaces to check out, it’s no wonder! Grab your family and take in a show this summer – the box office is open!

In the capitol of Ohio, Columbus, the well-known Columbus Symphony Orchestra performs musical programs year-round. Perhaps their most popular performance is the annual Holiday Pops.
The top art museum in Ohio is the Cleveland Museum of Art, which recently acquired a Pre-Columbian artworks at auction. The museum is most excited about a bag made by the Wari people of Peru, about 750 AD. The bag, which has a long strap and narrow opening, is made of hardened hide, and has the image of a human head. The museum also acquired the most elaborate Wari litter known anywhere in the world. The litter shows a dignitary which sits in a litter carried by four porters who are dressed in loincloths and have ring-like headbands. The items were brought in a lot from Sotheby’s in New York on May 13, 2011.
Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Art Museum is embarking on a unique project. Per Knutas will be cleaning and stabilizing one of Vincent van Gogh’s last masterpieces, Undergrowth with Two Figures, in public. He will be working on Tuesday through Friday afternoons and on select Saturdays. The process, which can be viewed by the public, will remove wax from the painting and will reveal the original colors and textures of the painting, which is on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, until the project is finished.

For the Ohioan or Ohio traveller who enjoys a wide range of artistic pursuits, the Columbus Museum of Art is a must-visit destination. 2011 is a great year to visit the Museum for the first time, and even long-time visitors will find something new to explore. The museum recently renovated its Elizabeth M. and Richard M. Ross Building and constructed a new Center for Creativity. The latter site is perfect for both budding artists and parents looking to express their inner Picasso, with special activities that are designed to boost your creative spirits.Of course, art fans have never been disappointed by the CMA’s impressive collection, including beautiful pieces in the Old Masters, Late Modernism & Contemporary, and Folk Art categories. Just one look at the seductive beauty of Artemisia Gentileschi’s Bathsheba (c. 1636) is enough to bring most people back for more. Then again, you may prefer the postmodern style of Malcolm Morley’s Floundering Vessel with Blue Whales and Viking Ships (1998). All is available for 5 for adults, 4 for students and seniors, and 3 for children 6-17. Children 5 and under are free.Make sure to keep a close eye on the museum’s schedule of events for travelling exhibitions and performances. On November 13, Kevin McGuire (Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera) performed a musical tribute to Irving Berlin and Cole Porter that was simply de-lovely. We’re very excited to see what the CMA has planned next.

Ohio has spawned musical wonders in a variety of genres. You might not see any of these performers on your local stage anytime soon, but OhioLyric.com would like to take this time to remember some musicians that have since moved away.Steve Arrington started as a member of the Toledo, Ohio lounge band The Murphy’s. He later became a key member (drumming and vocals) for the popular Ohio funk band Slave, which had several hits including “Just a Touch of Love” and “Watching You.” He later went on to a solo career.Dan Auerbach is a member of the Ohio blues-rock group The Black Keys (based in Akron). In 2009, he released his first solo album, Keep It Hid, on which he delved into gospel sounds along with his customary rock bent.Bobby Bare is a country musician from Ironton with a long career, releasing his debut “Detroit City” And Other Hits in 1963 and his latest album, The Moon Was Blue, in 2005. In between, he also fathered alternative country musician Bobby Bare Jr., with whom he recorded the Grammy-nominated 1974 song “Daddy What If.”James Emery is a jazz guitarist who grew up in Shaker Heights. He released albums on numerous avant-garde and indie-labels, including Knitting Factory and the German Enja Records. His latest album, 2003′s Transformations, was released in 2003. What’s he been doing since then? We’re not quite sure.Of course, we can’t go without mentioning Jalacy Hawkins, better known as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. His raw style of rock and roll, exemplified on tracks like “I Put a Spell on You” and “Orange Colored Sky,” has captured numerous fans through the years. Fun fact: at the time of his death in 2000, it was estimated that Hawkins had somewhere around 75 children.

Few people capture the feel of Cleveland like Richard “Dick” Feagler, who started writing his column in 1970 and continued (across several papers) until 2009. The Plain Dealer hosted the longest run of the column, starting in 1993however, he started off in the now-defunct Cleveland Press. Ohio drama fans may know him best for the local stage production of “Christmas at Aunt Ida’s,” which was based off one of his columns and was performed in 2006 and 2007 at the Bay Village Huntington Playhouse. Taking place the year after World War II, “Aunt Ida’s” is the Christmas story of Feagler’s experiences in a household of women, and how some traditions survive despite the horrors of war. Many of Feagler’s columns have been collected over the years in four collections: Feagler’s Cleveland (1996), “Did You Read Feagler Today?” (1998), “I Know I’m Not Supposed to Say ThisBut I’ll Say It Anyway” (2001), and “Is It Just Me?”: More of the Best Commentary from Cleveland’s Most Outspoken Columnist (2005). As you can probably deduce from the titles if you’re not familiar with his work, Feagler’s commentary is not always gentle. Even “Christmas at Aunt Ida’s” offers some social commentary on how the traditions of Christmas have changed over the years. For almost 40 years, though, Feagler’s voice was an Ohio state treasure, and his retirement, while well deserved, still leaves many aching for someone to fill the void. Have they appeared yet, or are we still waiting? Only time will tell.

No matter what era of music floats your boat, the Columbus Symphony has something to offer. For example, on October 16 conductor Michael Erickson is conducting hits by the Lettermen, the male vocal trio that started performing in 1959 and has had 16 singles hit the top 10 since then, including “Put Your Head on my Shoulder,” “Shangri-La,” and “When I Fall In Love.”The week after that, conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni shows us the truth of the old adage “If it ain’t baroque, don’t play it”or something like that. Punning aside, the symphony will be performing pieces by Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Stravinsky, and even the ubiquitous Pachelbel’s Canon.Performances in November include violinist Charles Wetherbee, singer Neil Sedaka, and a rousing version of Handel’s Messiah conducted by Ronald Jenkins. But the real treat is coming up next January, when international superstar pianist Lang Lang hits the Ohio Theatre stage.

With the Ohio Lyric Theatre halting performances indefinitely, fine arts fans in Ohio will have to go elsewhere for their fine arts fix. Luckily, the Geuga Lyric Theater is more than up to the task. The theater dates back to 1939, when it was founded as a cinema. The Geauga Lyric Theater Guild moved in back in 1997the guild itself dates back to 1954. Despite their long history, the Guild continues to innovate, with their first Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, receiving rave reviews back in 2009.Currently showing is the “murder musical” Something’s Afoot, beginning on October 8 and running through to the 24th. The musical premiered in 1972, and satirized the popular detective stories of Agatha Christie, starting by killing off the butler. Don’t be turned off by the multitude of murdersthe show is more comedy than thriller, and there’s plenty of amusing lyrics to win over the blackest hearts. In December, the Guild will premiere It’s a Wonderful Life, running from December 3 to the 19th. The film was released in 1946. The adaptation used is by James W. Rodgers, who premiered the play in 1993. Even if you remember the film, we recommend turning out for the play, which tackles the plot from a different direction (the opening scene starts with Clarence and George Bailey). In January, the classic Our Town by Thornton Wilder will be presented by the Skip Kelley Youth Theater. Come out and see this popular story re-energized by a new generation of players. The show takes place from January 14-23.
